Season Pick and Punt - Kevo
It’s time for the fourth instalment in our series of articles that offer up a Season Pick and Punt from each of the FPL Dugout Contributors. The Season Pick is a free choice whereas the Punt is limited to players with ownership of under 4%. Following in the footsteps of Marco, Sleno and Shiva, it’s now Kevo’s turn…
For my picks this season I have gone for two players from the same country, one of European football’s returning giants that are sure to be in the mix in Brazil in 2014. The country of choice? Belgium.
My two picks have both spent a full season in the Premier League and hope they can kick on in their second season and try and join the double century points club. My Pick and Punt this season are Eden Hazard and Kevin Mirallas.
Season Pick – Eden Hazard
In his first Premier League season, Eden Hazard scored an impressive 190 points, scoring 9 goals, racking up 16 assists and bagging 22 bonus points, ending the season as the 7th highest overall points scorer.
An interesting point to note is that Hazard only accrued two yellow cards and no red cards all season (we’ll forget the Swansea ball boy incident for now).
Hazard starts this season at £9.5m which doesn’t move from last season. Remember he was straight out the blocks after the summer break, scoring double figures in each of his first 3 outings.
Jose and Chelsea will be looking to get off to a fast start and the double Gameweek against the newly renamed Hull City Tigers and relegation candidates Aston Villa at the Bridge will provide all the opportunity they need to get amongst the goals.
A considerable amount of managers will be selecting 3 Blues for the off and Hazard will be amongst the most selected of those 3, especially with the striking situation at the Bridge yet to be resolved.
Chelsea have an attacking team and with the Special One back at the helm, they will be hoping to keep Jose’s unbeaten record at the Bridge going, and my thinking is that now Hazard has had one Premier League season under his belt, he’ll explode in 2013/14.
Season Punt – Kevin Mirallas
Injured for parts of last season, Mirallas appeared to finally find his game at the business end of 2012/13. In total he bagged 96 points, comprising of six goals, five assists and 13 bonus points from 24 starts.
Listed as a midfielder, we could see him play a more forward role on the right of a front three. That could see him produce many more marauding runs and play a starring role for Martinez’s Everton, who will pride themselves on high possession football with more than a helping of attacking play.
Fixtures look good too with opening games against Norwich (A), West Brom (H) and Cardiff (A), which will provide Mirallas and Everton a good opening platform for a decent start, and the addition of Kone who was excellent for Wigan last season can only boost his assist potential.
There’s plenty of potential in both picks and no doubt both will fill many “template” teams over the coming season. We are all aware of the Special One’s powers but if Martinez can live up to the hype that surrounds him, then Mirallas could just be the catalyst for that to happen.
