Let battle of the Da Silva’s commence!

Wes Brown and John O’Shea’s transfers to Sunderland pave the way for one of the Da Silva twins to cement a regular role at right back for Man United this season.

Rafael Da Silva and Fabio Da Silva, 21, both had brief stints at right back last season but were always at threat from O’Shea, who was often preferred, particularly when Ferguson opted for his experience in the big games.

But with O’Shea’s departure (and Brown who could also play right back), Ferguson must feel confident that the Da Silva twins are ready to make the step up, and we’ll have to monitor pre-season to see which twin wins out.

Rafael (£5.5m) and Fabio (£5m) could offer a great option in Fantasy Premier League and provide much cheaper alternatives to the likes of Vidic (£8m) and Evra (£7m).

Perhaps Rafael has the edge. He’s a natural right back whereas Fabio has played a bit more on the left – although he’s just as accomplished on the right.

Rafael played the whole game at right back in United’s recent 7-0 thrashing of the Seattle Sounders in a pre-season friendly. Interestingly Fabio came on for Evra at left back on 56 minutes.

They are typical Brazilian defenders. They love to attack, play with a smile on their face, and show endless amounts of youthful energy.

They could easily chip in with a few goals and rack up between 5 and 10 assists over the season.

Let’s cast our minds back to Man United’s game at Wigan last season. Fabio came off the bench, replacing Rafael, and bagged 2 goals!

There are a few negatives though. Both twins have a terrible injury record and quite often miss chunks of matches through muscle strains.

They are also hot-headed and a red card is always a worry. Hopefully we’ll see a more mature and controlled bunch of Da Silva’s this season, while maintaining their enthusiasm for the game.

Man United face Arsenal and Tottenham inside their first 3 games, so if you do pick one of the twins, you may need some attacking points to see initial profit.

Any Man United fans out there willing to give us your insight on who’ll get the right back spot?
