10 Punt Options
This week’s article looks at some interesting punt options (players owned by a relatively small percentage of Fantasy Football managers) with good point-scoring potential. These players, often referred to as ‘differentials’, can seem more risky purchases than players with relatively high levels of ownership.
However, identifying and buying good punt options can be a shrewd Fantasy Football strategy because if these players score good points, you will be one of relatively few managers who own them. Getting it right can be a combination of good timing, trusting your instinct and perhaps thinking long-term.
Here are 10 players to consider. As of writing (21st October) their ownership fell between 1-5%. I’ve chosen two players from each of five percentage ranges who could prove to be useful buys in coming gameweeks. Here on FPL Dugout we normally class a punt as 4% ownership or below but for the purposes of this article I’ve extended it to 5%.
5% or less
David Silva (Manchester City £9.3m – 5% owned). Silva has shown good form since his recent return from injury with 1 goal and 1 assist in his last 2 games. He could be a great buy given his record last season (4 goals, 12 assists and 20 bonus points) and the previous season (6 goals, 17 assists and 21 bonus points). A big player.
Adam Lallana (Southampton £6.1m – 4.5%). After a slow start the Saints’ captain has netted twice and made 2 assists in the past 4 games. He is in great form and, if he maintains it over the season, few will be surprised to see him in England’s World Cup squad.
4% or less
Álvaro Negredo (Manchester City £9.3m – 4%). City’s burly Spanish forward looks a good foil for strike partner Agüero. His form has been ominously good for club and country. He now has an impressive 3 goals and 2 assists in just 5 starts for City.
Andros Townsend (Tottenham £5.6m – 4%). Townsend is looking increasingly like the new golden boy of English football – his ownership has already begun to rise rapidly and could be 10% or even 20% soon. Although he has only 1 goal and 1 assist in 7 games, he is enjoying brilliant form and appears capable of plenty of goals and assists. The only concern is that Spurs manager AVB may decide to rest him in the coming weeks.
3% or less
Yohan Cabaye (Newcastle £6.2m – 2.8%). The Toon Army’s French talisman has been restricted by injury this season but has managed 2 goals and 1 assist in the past 4 games (averaging 5 points per game) in a Newcastle side that is showing signs of improvement.
Santi Cazorla (Arsenal £9.6m – 2.2%). Spanish midfield magician Cazorla returned from injury last weekend in a healthy Gunners victory. He could quickly resume his fantastic form of last season when he scored an impressive 12 goals and made 13 assists. Potentially rotation-proof in coming weeks.
2% or less
Angel Rangel (Swansea £5.4m – 1.8%). Swansea’s Spanish full-back is always a threat going forward and managed 3 goals and 1 assist last year.
Bacary Sagna (Arsenal £5.5m – 1%). I’ve included the Arsenal full-back on the basis that the Gunners just might begin to keep clean sheets soon after conceding in all but one of their games so far.
1% or less
Pablo Osvaldo (Southampton £7.8m – 0.4%). Italian striker Osvaldo may only have 1 goal and 1 assist so far but could yet bag plenty of goals for Saints manager Pochettino if he regains his goalscoring form from their successful spell at Spanish La Liga side Espanyol a few seasons ago. A long-shot but one to watch.
Samuel Eto’o (Chelsea £8.6m – 0.7%). OK, Eto’o is also a long-shot at this stage. Not too many of us will want to dive in for the Cameroon forward too soon because he hasn’t really got started and remains a rotation risk. However, if he keeps scoring and making assists, it will be hard for Mourinho to leave him out. His amazing goalscoring record for many clubs means he is one we should not overlook.
Here’s hoping fellow managers find this list useful, if only to add players to their watchlist for future gameweeks. I inevitably had to leave out some players with good shouts to be included on the list. Please feel free to share your own ideas of punt options, I’m always interested to hear your ideas.
