Gameweek 8 catches fire on explosive Saturday
That was a crazy afternoon, wasn’t it? I’ve only just caught my breath, but I wouldn’t change a thing, and this bonkers day reminded me just why I love the Premier League and fantasy football.
We had a bit of everything but the day was defined by Southampton’s incredible 8-0 win against Sunderland, and the ridiculously high points totals from Sergio Aguero and Dusan Tadic.
Let’s start with Aguero. I watched him torment Villa in Gameweek 7, and was relieved when he only scored once, because he looked deadly and should have scored more. A huge haul was signposted and today he delivered four goals.
I don’t own Aguero, so after he hammered in his first, I frantically flicked through my mini-league rivals to check the damage, and was surprised to see few people owned him.
So why did only 13% of FPL managers own Aguero going into this weekend? His 12.3 price tag and dreadful injury record must be factors.
For example, I’d probably need to use my wildcard to get the Argentine, because I’d have to undertake hefty surgery on my squad to upgrade Lukaku or Welbeck.
Leighton Baines would probably have to go, along with Sterling, and that’s a big call because all these players have good fixtures and form.
Aguero’s poor injury record is an ongoing concern, and he’s always let me down in the past. I’m just reluctant to go there again – and I’m sure others feel the same. I guess it comes down to whether he really is ‘essential’?
Next, Southampton, and their 8-0 trouncing of Sunderland. Saints were winning 3-0 in a routine game, until they smashed five goals in a crazy last half hour. Dusan Tadic leapt from one assist to a goal and four assists – tallying 23 points!
This transformed the Gameweek for Tadic owners (just 3%), especially those without the ever impressive Graziano Pelle, who fired a brace and assist.
Today’s haul won’t come as a surprise to some, because Tadic hit the woodwork twice and had an effort cleared off the line during his last home game against QPR in Gameweek 6.
I remember signing Tadic at 4am on a blurry Saturday morning in Australia, shortly before catching my flight to Hong Kong.
This was back in Gameweek 4 and I’ve been slightly underwhelmed by just a few assists. Now I am reassured that my sleep-deprived mind was on to something.
Tadic is a popular man around these parts (FPL Dugout legends, Shiva and Mesh, owned him from Gameweek 1), and the Serb looks a great signing from here – Southampton’s fixtures remain strong and now Tadic has the form to deliver.
I haven’t even mentioned Diego Costa, who finally missed out through injury, leaving Costa’s 66% ownership wondering what to do next ahead of a trip to Old Trafford next week.
Mourinho ruled Costa out of Chelsea’s midweek Champions League game with Maribor, and joked he’d be fully fit for Spain’s internationals in November:
“I think he’ll be in great condition in mid-November to be back for the national team. That’s for sure. Our medical department will take good care of him and he’ll be in perfect condition. He will play for me when he’s got free time from the national team.”
I’ll finish with something different by highlighting someone who flopped today – Stuart Downing. Why? Downing still gave us plenty to ponder, showing great potential in an attacking role behind the striker.
The former England player fired in six shots, four from inside the box, and created three chances for teammates. An unfashionable pick but someone who could soon explode for just 5.7.
What a day!
