Gameweek 1 reaction - Bolton do a Blackpool

Well, that first afternoon didn’t go to plan, did it? Blackpool stunned us all last opening day with a 4-0 win at Wigan, and today it was the turn of Bolton, who destroyed QPR 4-0 in their own back yard.

And Jose Enrique and Luis Suarez started for Liverpool, which was something of a surprise.

Many of us had high hopes for the likes of Andy Carroll, Adel Taarabt, Victor Moses, Charles N’Zogbia and Grant Holt, but it was Gary Cahill (goal, clean sheet), Chris Eagles (2 assists) and Ivan Klasnic (goal, assist) who stole the show.

Just how many of us had them, though? Bolton were handed a horrific start by the fixture computer and begin that run with Man City next week.

That sums up the early action to be honest. None of this afternoon’s fancied players really performed, other than one or two, including Shay Given.

The new Villa keeper put in a masterful performance to shut Fulham out and deserves 3 bonus points for his Man of the Match performance.

It will be interesting to see how the new bonus points system treats him on Monday morning.

So now we head into the Arsenal game with hopes pinned on Robin van Persie, among others, to provide a lift at the end of this underwhelming day.

Let’s remember it’s very early days and we’re just about half way through the first gameweek. The likes of Silva, Nani, Rooney, Malouda and Drogba are yet to play.

And while it’s easy to write off Taarabt and co, hold fire, it was only one game, no matter how bad!

At least one thing did go to plan – Kieran Dyer was stretchered off on 7 minutes with an injured foot.
